Why It’s Okay to Blow Up Your Lifefeatured
Pеople die a thousand times to get to who they are. – Zach Bryan
…The lyrics that currently reverberate within my soul every moment of my waking life.
Because the girl I was years ago had no idea she was meant to be so much more than a writer, because the writer had no idea she was meant to be so much more than a Communications Manager because the Communications Manager had no clue she would be called to be a Content Manager, because the Content Manager had no idea she was destined to be so much more than a Marketing Director.
We, and by ‘we,’ I mean Millennials, were taught to do just a little bit better than our parents.
But our parents grew up at a time when hard work equated to the American Dream. And the American Dream has long been shattered.
I did the things I was supposed to do. I went and got the education, and then I went further and got the higher education. I was told to “pick one thing” that I was good at. And I did.
And boy did I learn a lot about myself throughout the process.
But isn’t it just a little bit crazy that a 17-year-old is supposed to decide what they are going to work on becoming for the rest of their lives?
Their brains are not even fully formed yet; their choices – beyond questionable… yet they are told to choose ONE path.
So we go about studying the thing, and if we’re lucky, we change the thing we’re studying because we discover something new about ourselves along the way.
Many of us stay on track and get the diploma and go off into the world with no real-life experience and no clue where to even start…
School doesn’t teach us that we’re not special and that our first job may be making French fries at In-N-Out Burger (don’t get me wrong, some of my fondest memories come from growing up in this place).
School doesn’t teach us that the structure of the degree may more important than the actual content of the degree. We learn how to learn and how to be responsible adults juggling busy schedules with studying, working, socializing, and all the other stuff we don’t dare tell our parents about.
But when during our college days are we taught that we will die a thousand times to get to who we truly are?
That we will grow and evolve and learn one day that we are capable of going far beyond that one thing we were taught to focus on in school?
One thing’s for sure: I was told to do the one thing, get the job doing the one thing, and that everything would work out in the end.
It didn’t.
I did all the jobs only to realize I would outgrow every single one of them.
Not only that, but I outgrew my entire degree. I once thought that the only way to leave my mark was to create. And to create behind the scenes so that other people could shine with the results of my work.
Now in my mid-30s, I realize I have a calling to serve so many more humans on a much deeper level.
I hid behind the curtain for years, scared of allowing myself to be noticed in any way. I grew up making myself as tiny as possible because I was under the impression that my work would speak for itself.
Somewhere along the way, I realized I would always be noticed, no matter how hard I tried to remain anonymous and hidden away.
So what happens when you realize you want to do so much more than the one thing you were good at when you were 17?
And that the world won’t allow you to hide in the shadows anymore?
You blow up your entire damn life.
You decide it’s time to finally bury the dead version of yourself you’ve been dragging along with you for years. The version that has told you you’re only good at the one thing you decided to be good at decades ago. The version that made walking into your life excruciating every single day.
Guess what? That’s allowed.
You are allowed to grow, transform, and reach for more than the one thing you learned in school. You can reach for ALL the things your heart desires. And I don’t mean this in a cheesy way.
In my case, my career path led me to the realization that my purpose is to impact humans exponentially. Not 1 or 2, but a collective. And that may be one of the reasons why the only children I have right now walk on all fours.
You’re reading this after I decided to blow it all up. All I was certain of was this: Forget all the things you thought you would be a slave to for the rest of your time on this earth. You were not made to be small. You were not made to be a sheep; It’s now time to redirect the trajectory of your entire life.
And guess what?
I am okay. I am alive. Some even think I am “thriving” because I post videos of me smiling ear to ear, talking about how excited I am about my new chapter, my career rebirth.
I was terrified to blow it up. I questioned myself and everything beyond me. But no one who knows me on a soul level ever did. They carried my frail body through the wreckage of my intentional explosion.
I blew up the life, the chains, the limited mindset. I blew up the notion that my life’s purpose fit into a sad, little singular job title.
This is a proof of life letter.
You too can blow up your life if you decide to.
You can decide to start all over again at any point in time.
There are so many things to learn in this life, so many dimensions of your soul to explore.
Okay, maybe you don’t want to blow it all up. That may sound a little too scary. So you may just try to reinvent little pieces of yourself while the old you is still a fully functional contributor of society. You can do that too. You can test the waters.
I decided to go all in with the colossal disaster route. Because I knew that the only way that I would truly commit to fully becoming the new version of myself was to kill the old version of myself. So here we are. I died another time to get to who I am at my core. And I may even die all over again.
And this is all totally okay.
Not going to lie, I feel like baby Bambi. My legs are trying to stabilize in a world where I have literally just been born.
But guess what?
I feel more alive and more free than I ever have before. And this, to me, is exactly the version of me I needed to fully become.
I know that what I am about to build will be bigger than anything I have built before, and I have to thank the blow-up for that. I knew I didn’t want to gut the old structure but rather build something new from scratch.
Stick around if you’re curious to see what I build. And blow it all up to join me on this wild ride.
Love Deeply and Forever,
